Well I am home from Germany now and I always have good intentions of blogging every day when I am there, but that never happens. Never enough time, although I do take train or car time to jot down a few notes. ?So, I will try to write about things now as I look through the pictures.

We usually do a trip in May because Germany is such a pleasure to the eye in May. Yellow fields of rapeseed blooming in fields scattered over the hillsides looking like a patchwork quilt, tons of lilacs blooming and rhododendron and hydrangea. ?It was gorgeous.

I had a few days before we met our clients for a personal heritage tour and we decided to visit a local ?landlord?s? house called Schloss Hunnefeld, located near Bad Essen. In the olden days the landlord was the person who was in charge of collecting the rents and taxes from the small farmers. ?In the 13th century Schloss Hunnefeld ? was a moated ?water? castle. ?Today you come down a long lane into a large clearing and see the impressive residence. The building is a three-winged two story in the Renaissance style. ?There is a small island in the moat now and behind it a beautiful English garden. ?There also is French style dovecote from the 1700?s. ?I could picture the small farmer walking his way down the long lane with his hard earned money or livestock or whatever he had as payment.

In the building where the caf? is now was the counting house, or the place where taxes and rents were collected. ? I guess a little history of the ?farm system? in Germany is in order. ?Of course this is a generalization, different areas had different laws and different systems but the farm system had been around for centuries, its roots go back to the Germanic tribes, who were nomads and whose economy was based on summer military campaigns, in which the men earned the tribes living by plunder. ?When they settled down to more agricultural pursuits versus the nomadic lifestyle, they needed the protection against other marauding tribes so they pledged service and fealty to their warrior overlords. ?By the end of the Middle Ages, military protection by the overlords was not needed as much, so the overlords settled down too. ?Land and income from agricultural products replaced plunder as their primary source of income, and the relationship of overlord and peasant farmer became firmly established. ?At least this is what I have read and I am sure there are probably more complicated reasons but this serf and lord system was around for centuries and German villages and farms used to ?belong? to someone that they owed taxes and rents too. ?We have found records for some of these big farms that list all the small farms they owned and how much they collected etc. ?Sometimes (not sure how often as I have not personally seen that many) they might list the farmers names that were under their control. ?Of course in the Northwest of Germany the larger farms had the names and whoever lived there took that name. But that is a story for another day.

We may look back on Anderson's works as we do on the boxes of Joseph Cornell -- formal troves of frippery, studded with nostalgic private jokes, that lodge inexplicably in the heart. In Moonrise Kingdom, that lodging is already under way.

It makes you nostalgic for the pangs of young love.

What makes it an Anderson movie are the things he adds which mark all his films - the pop-cultural obsessions and excruciatingly detailed set decorations, overarching thematic concerns and little stylistic tics.

I liked this one because of its young performers, the evocative island setting (filmed in Rhode Island), Alexandre Desplat's lovely score and Robert Yeoman's slightly grainy cinematography.

The director's best film since 1998's Rushmore, it has none of the self-conscious smugness of The Life Aquatic or the empty eccentricity of The Royal Tenenbaums.

A gorgeously shot, ingeniously crafted, ?ber-Andersonian bonbon that, even in its most irritatingly whimsical moments, remains an effective deliverer of cinematic pleasure.

A gossamer fable of adolescent romance, played out with the cheekily whimsical, visually delicious style for which Anderson is famous.

Wes Anderson's most sartorially significant film yet.

At once funny and melancholic, whimsical and poignantly true.

One is at times reminded of AE Housman.

Moonrise Kingdom is a delight... stuffed full of the quirky details and gags that are Anderson's trademarks, but it also possesses an emotional undertow that will tug at those viewers in tune with its singular sensibility.

Capturing our inner children

If the deadpan sensibility of the film ultimately leaves it feeling a tad lightweight, that isn't to say that Moonrise Kingdom isn't a funny, witty and well-crafted film.

Typically quirky Wes Anderson dramedy has lots of heart.

A bittersweet and evocative period piece that's both a visual and narrative delight.

No one has an eye or sensibility like Anderson's, but this is a chilly disappointment. The unaffecting kids are meant to be the emotional center, yet the adults steal the film.

I really wanted to like this film. I respect Wes Anderson and his distinctive voice as a writer-director ('Rushmore' is one of my favorite films of the 1990s), but this latest endeavor is so precious and self-aware that it nearly smothers itself.

Those who find the director's work flawed by preciousness, however, may grow impatient well before the movie reaches the 90-minute mark.

Anderson has imagined the '60s on the East Coast as if from an Eddie Bauer catalog and Boys' Life, with the sensibility of The New Yorker.

Like many holiday locations, you wouldn't want to live there, but a mini-break from the norm can be a real tonic.

A sweet, charming and altogether delightful bit of whimsy from writer/director Wes Anderson.

I normally end up liking Wes Anderson's films, but I love this one.

The delightful Moonrise Kingdom marks a career high for offbeat auteur Wes Anderson.

Moonrise Kingdom is bewitching.

Discovery promises unique medicine for treatment of chronic and diabetic wounds

ScienceDaily (May 28, 2012) ? A unique new medicine that can start and accelerate healing of diabetic and other chronic wounds is being developed at Ume? University in Sweden. After several years of successful experimental research, it is now ready for clinical testing.

Behind this new medicine is a group of researchers at the Department of Medical Chemistry and Biophysics who have made the unique finding that the protein plasminogen is a key-regulator that initiates and accelerates wound healing by triggering the inflammatory reaction. Their discovery is now being published in the journal Blood.

?Today we have the knowledge needed to develop a medicine,? says Professor Tor Ny, one of the authors of the article. ?The bulk of the preclinical research has been completed, and we have had meetings with the Medical Product Agency to discuss a program for clinical testing.?

Plasminogen is a well-known plasma protein that is produced in the liver and found in all bodily fluids. The Ume? researchers have now re-assessed its role and managed to show that the concentration of plasminogen increases dramatically in and around wounds, which is an important signal to start the inflammatory reaction required for healing. In diabetic wounds the level of plasminogen does not increase in the same way, and this seems to be the reason why these wounds do not heal. In diabetic mice and rats the researchers were able to show that the healing process starts immediately when plasminogen is injected around the wound, which then heals fully.

A cell line for producing plasminogen on a larger scale has also been developed, and the goal is to start clinical testing as soon as funding can be arranged. The researchers have high hopes, as plasminogen is an endogenous protein that can be assumed not to produce side effects.

The need for a biologics for treating chronic wounds is urgent. Diabetic wounds that do not heal are the most severe type of chronic wounds, affecting millions of people annually. Many of the roughly 350 million diabetes patients in the world develop foot ulcers, and in 10-15 million cases this ultimately leads to amputation. Today?s treatment of diabetic wounds consists primarily of traditional wound care, with compresses and bandages; there is no effective medication.

The Ume? researchers are initially concentrating on diabetic wounds, but plasminogen also has great potential for working on other types of wounds. This includes tympanic membrane perforations and periodontitis. Being a pro-inflammatory activator, plasminogen has moreover been shown to be effective in combating antibiotic-resistant bacteria (MRSA).

Rise in animal bites causes concern

Dog and cat owners are not doing enough to prevent their animals from biting Saskatoon residents, says a city report.

The number of bites in the Saskatoon Health Region has increased to 416 in 2011 from 305 in 2005, an alarming trend that points to a lack of awareness in the community about bite prevention, said the report written by the city's animal control committee with help from the health region.

An upward trend of animal bites in Saskatoon and surrounding area is more concerning because the majority of bites are from pets, not wild animals, said Julie Kryzanowski, the health region's deputy medical health officer.

"The numbers seem to be increasing, but the troubling part is that most of them are exposures from domestic animals," she said. "That's particularly frustrating because that means they should have been prevented."

About 80 per cent of the 416 animal exposures - bites or scratches - in Saskatoon last year were caused by dogs and cats, according to health region numbers. About 92 per cent of those bites were caused by dogs and cats with owners.

There are more pet owners in Saskatoon than ever and many are "unaware of their responsibilities to their community and their pet" or they are aware but don't care, the report said.

The health region worked with the city's advisory committee on animal control to establish a new education campaign about bite prevention. The advisory committee presented a report to city council's administration and finance committee on Wednesday seeking approval for the campaign.

The campaign will focus on pet owners and doctors and veterinarians to educate the two groups about bite prevention and proper reporting. Posters and bookmarks will be distributed to vet and medical offices, pet stores, public facilities and in utility bills. The campaign will cost $3,000 and needs approval from city council after moving past the committee stage.

The health region and the advisory committee are hoping the release of the bite numbers will be a "call to action" to reduce incidents in the city.

Pet owners need to take better care of their pets in public and must pay attention to the situations in which their pets are known to be provoked, the committee heard. Ensuring a pet has an up to date rabies vaccination is recommended.

"When we do our investigations (into exposure incidents), in about two-thirds of the cases the pets have never been vaccinated or the vaccine is not up to date," Kryzanowski said.

Animal "exposures" are classified as any incident in which an animal bites or scratches or otherwise does something to break the skin of a human. The exposures run the risk of rabies, which attacks the human nervous system. "Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms start to show," Kryzanowski said.

The last known case of rabies in Saskatchewan was "many decades ago," she added. But the risk is always there, especially from wild animals.

Last year, the health region received eight reports of skunk bites and 34 reports of bat bites.

Illinois faces a crucial decision: Do we allow a notoriously irresponsible company like the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) into our state, or do we send them a clear message that Illinois is not Arizona by passing Senate Bill 1064? SB 1064 would block state and local government bodies from contracting with private companies to run detention facilities in Illinois.

Illinois law already bars the state and local governments from contracting with private companies to build and run correctional facilities. As this law states, jailing people is a "uniquely governmental function." SB 1064 would extend this decades-old public policy to civil detention settings and close the remaining door enabling the private prison industry to come to Illinois.

CCA, however, wants to build a new immigration jail in Crete, Illinois. A debate has arisen about whether this detention center is any good for Illinois. On our side of the debate are more than 1,100 local residents, law enforcement leaders, organized labor, the American Civil Liberties Union, more than 100 community organizations, and nearly every religious denomination, including the Catholic Conference of Illinois. On the other side of the debate are high-powered highly-paid prison lobbyists.

Last weekend CCA made national headlines when a riot flared up in its Natchez, Mississippi detention center -- a center just like the one proposed in Crete. One guard was killed in the riot and at least 20 others were injured. More than 300 inmates ran wild, some using sticks and homemade knives. A bonfire started on the prison grounds with mattresses and wood gathered from the detention center. Local police chiefs and sheriffs had to be called in from across the state to fill in the gaps left by prison staff who were not given proper support from CCA.

This crisis is nothing new for CCA. In 2010, CCA was forced to settle a lawsuit because it was running a "gladiator school" in an Idaho prison where guards forced inmates to fight one another as they watched. This isn't even the first crisis in Mississippi, where another bonfire occurred years earlier. Chemical grenades had to be used at yet another CCA prison in Tennessee. A total of 24 immigrant detainees have died in CCA custody over the years.

CCA, a multi-billion dollar corporation, has a long, well-documented history of cutting costs, underpaying and under-training staff, and fighting unions. These profit-driven practices have created poor morale, high turnover, and personnel who are ill-prepared to handle their responsibilities.

It is important to set the record straight about jobs, too. This new center would be a job killer, not a job creator. The Crete facility is part of a plan by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to close up detention operations at three other detention centers in Illinois. This would result in what we estimate to be at least 185 lost jobs, with no guarantee that these employees would find employment in the new facility.

But above all else, the Mississippi riot this past weekend should end the debate on this issue. We don't need that kind of crisis in Illinois.

Last December, Google chairman Eric Schmidt told an Italian publication that the company would ship an Android-powered tablet "of the highest quality" within the next six months. Now a report suggests that a 7-inch tablet, co-developed by Google and Asus, will be hitting shelves in July.

The report comes from DigiTimes ??a tech industry?site known for vaguely sourced reports which don't always pan out ? so we're taking things with a hefty serving of salt, of course.

But where there's smoke, there's often fire?? and there are certainly several signs pointing to a summer release for the mysterious Google tablet.?NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim previously told CNET that this mobile device was in the works and that a production run was "slated for April" (which would put a shipping date into the early summer).

There aren't many details about the tablet though. Shim suggested that it "will have a 1280x800 resolution 7-inch display," previous reports explained that it will be priced?between $149 and $249.?

That's about all we know for now. Well, that and the fact that whatever happens, the Google tablet will have an uphill battle trying to?win customers away from the top-selling?iPad, and the current Android leader, Amazon's?Kindle Fire.

But Lands' End has teamed up with Self magazine and the Curvy Girl Guide for the second annual National Swimsuit Confidence Week -- seven days devoted to inspiring women of all shapes and sizes to embrace their bodies and step out in their swimsuits with pride.

"We want women to get to a place where they're comfortable in their swimsuits but more importantly their bodies," Curvy Girl founder Brittany Gibbons told The Huffington Post.

The campaign is asking women to inspire others by posting pictures of themselves in their swimsuits on their personal Facebook page or the Lands' End Facebook page -- or even tweet them out using the hashtag #confidence.

So far, 21 Curvy Girl writers along with more than 20 breast cancer survivors from Beyond the Boobie Trap have posted pics of themselves posing in their Lands' End suits.

"When we launched last year, the response was phenomenal," Michele Casper, director of public relations at Lands' End told The Huffington Post. "It very much became a sisterhood of women bonding together and supporting each other."

"Comments like 'Wow, you look great!' and 'You go girl!' on the posted photos was an amazing spirit-sharing experience," she added.

Researchers of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) looked at data from the Drug Induced Liver Injury Network, which evaluated patient information from eight sites across the US from 2003 to 2011.

Their findings disclosed that of 679 cases of liver injury, 93 (18 percent) were attributed to herbal or dietary supplements.

According to the results presented at the Digestive Disease Week meeting in San Diego, among patients who used supplements, 33 percent consumed bodybuilding products, 26 percent took weight loss goods, and the remaining 31 percent used a variety of other types of supplements.

?The number of cases in our network has increased over the years,? cautioned Dr. Jose Serrano of NIH. ?There were no deaths, but 7 percent of patients needed a liver transplant. These are not trivial consequences.?

About 40 percent of people in the US take herbal or dietary supplements. According to estimates, American consumers spent 26.7 billion dollars on supplements in 2009.

However, it seems that the people are less likely to be aware about those products? side effects such as hepatotoxicity or liver injuries.

Moreover, compared to medications, the highly marketed supplements are under much less strong regulation imposed by health authorities.

?There is so little regulation of the many products on the market,? said study leader Dr. Victor Navarro of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.

Experts suggest people to read the label?s of supplements carefully and consult with their physician before taking those products and do not assume that they are completely safe.

In a personal disclosure illustrating the long reach of mental illness, Canada?s health minister said Tuesday that she has lost ?a number of friends? to suicide.

?Our body gets ill from different things, and so does the mind,? Leona Aglukkaq told Postmedia News after leading a roundtable discussion on mental health at the 65th World Health Assembly in Geneva.

?We need to look at mental illness like any other illness,? she said. ?We need to start breaking down those barriers that individuals with mental illness face.?

At Tuesday?s session Aglukkaq showcased ??? but did not commit funds to ??? Canada?s new mental health strategy, a document years in the making that calls for a significant cash boost ??? $3-4 billion over 10 years ??? to overhaul a system so fractured and underfunded that many community service groups have dropped waiting lists to avoid giving people false hope that eventually their turn will come.

Aglukkaq said it was clear from her discussions with representatives from several countries ??? among them, Australia, Chile, Finland, the U.K., Bangladesh, India and the U.S. ???that mental health ?is a global priority? and that one of the biggest challenges is stigma.

?We believe that acknowledging that mental health is a global issue is the first important step in breaking down the stigma around mental health,? she said.

Asked if her own life has been touched by mental illness, Aglukkaq, MP for Nunavut, responded, ?Yes, absolutely.

?Family-wise, community, friends. I?ve also lost a number of friends to suicides,? she said. ?Whether that was associated (with mental illness) or not, one could never really know. But we make assumptions on why we lose people that we care about.

?But certainly, I?ve seen people suffer from it, whether from postpartum (depression) or whether through illness . . . The North is very small.?

Canada?s mental health commissioner, Dr. David Goldbloom, who also participated in the discussions in Geneva, said mental illness is so ubiquitous ??? with one in five Canadians every year experiencing some form ??? that ?there is no family in Canada that can stand up and say, ?Not us.??

?We have all known it within the context of our families,? said Goldbloom, chair of the Mental Health Commission of Canada.

Two of his cousins, who were physicians, died by suicide, Goldbloom said ??? a reminder that the ?white coat? does not protect doctors from the ?full range of illnesses and disorders to which our patients fall prey and experience.?

In a much-anticipated release, the commission earlier this month unveiled the national mental health strategy, 109 recommendations long. It calls for spending on mental health to increase from seven to nine per cent of total health spending.

Aglukkaq declined Tuesday to say whether the Harper government is prepared to put new money into the strategy. She said the government already has invested more than $100 million to support mental health.

?The mental health commission report stated very, very clearly that government alone cannot do this,? she said. ?Government alone cannot roll this plan out. It?s going to involve different levels of government, as well as the private sector.?

Goldbloom, a practicing psychiatrist and senior medical adviser at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, said the majority of people with mental illnesses ?are not getting help in our country.?

?And that?s really an unacceptable situation and a source of tremendous frustration, for health care providers but also, importantly, for individuals and their families facing these illnesses.?

Goldbloom said addressing the stigma and discrimination that surround mental illness ?is not simply a matter of changing how people think. It?s also changing how people act.?

Data from Canadian research shows that only 58 per cent of Canadians, when asked, say they would be willing to work alongside someone with a mental illness, he said.

?Well, guess what? In every Canadian workplace there are people silently struggling with mental illness, knowing that the stigma around it prevents them from talking about it as plainly as they might talk about their diabetes or heart disease,? he said.

?That?s the kind of everyday stigma people encounter in every aspect of their personal and professional lives. And it has to change.?
