The AMA welcomes the commitment to work today that if elected, would invest heavily in telemedicine to support and improve health services as part of a modern health care.AMA President, Dr Andrew Pesce, said the investment would help doctors make better use of communication technologies to provide services to patients who would otherwise have limited or no access to these services.
There would need to be close collaboration with the AMA and the medical profession, doctors especially in rural areas, to ensure that these initiatives offer the greatest benefit for patients and communities. The AMA also wants to see a corresponding commitment to attract and retain doctors in rural and remote communities in order to complete these important steps.
The ability to download test results and high quality diagnostic images quickly to improve the care that local doctors can provide through telemedicine networks, including the use of high-quality video for doctor-patient consultations and video conferencing.
The ongoing support for telemedicine services, with discounts for patients and support the IT infrastructure and training, will ensure that local doctors can get tickets for continuing specialist care and management of their patients.
It will allow physicians to overcome the tyranny of distance for the care and counseling for patients in rural and remote Australia. Some patients do not have to travel long hours and high costs for access to medical care.
